Teacher of the Year: Mariah Rascati

‘Teaching is one of the most rewarding jobs’

Mariah Rascati of Iotla Valley Elementary School was named the 2022-23 Macon County Schools Teacher of the Year. This school year is her fourth at Iotla Valley and her seventh as a classroom teacher.

Rascati received her Bachelor of Science in early childhood education from the University of Central Florida in 2016. That same year, she began her teaching career at Park Avenue Christian Academy. She returned to the University of Central Florida part-time to pursue her master’s degree, graduating in 2019. Rascati also received certifications in exceptional student education and teaching English as a second language (ESL). In August 2019, she moved to North Carolina and began teaching third grade at Iotla Valley where she has been ever since.

On being named Teacher of the Year, Rascati expresses her appreciation for Macon County Schools, Iotla Valley and those who have supported her since the beginning:

“Receiving this award is very humbling,” she said. “It reminds me that it doesn’t just take a village to raise a child, but it takes a village to support others of any age. I would not be the teacher I am today without the numerous people that have poured into me.”

“I love what I do and am thankful for each of the children I have met these last four years teaching here,” she continued. “I am very honored to represent Macon County and am so thankful for this experience.”

When asked about her favorite part of her school, she said “Everyone truly feels like a family here. I’m very close with my teammates; we know we have each other’s back. We rely on each other, share resources, celebrate in the good times, and support each other in the hard times. The administration is so supportive and kind. They push me to be my best and actively show their appreciation for the hard work they see from their teachers. I wouldn’t want to work at any other school.”

To those who are pursuing a career in education, Rascati offers this advice:

“To start, thank you,” she said. “Our children need wonderful teachers. Teaching is hard work, but it is truly one of the most rewarding jobs. Even if you are just teaching that child for one school year, you will have a lasting impact on their entire life. You may be the voice of love, encouragement, and kindness that they need to get through something.”

Outside of the classroom, Rascati enjoys being outside, cooking, spending time with her husband Josh and their friends, and visiting new places. She also loves to read, saying “you can find a book in my bag almost anywhere I go.”
