Nolen wins short story writing contest

Cozy & Content celebrates grand opening

After two months of successful business, Cozy and Content observed their official grand opening on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The book and vinyl boutique welcomed the public for a day of fall fun and refreshments and announced the winner of the short story writing contest. Excerpts from the top three submissions were read aloud, and the audience casted their votes to declare the winner. Owner Jennifer Kelley hosted the writing contest to showcase local talent and get people involved in the grand opening. Writers of all ages were called to submit stories of any genre, the only caveat being each story needed to include a bookstore opening in town.

“Everyone did an excellent job,” said Kelley. “We received so many wonderful entries and had such a fun time reading through them.”

After hearing the three submissions, the audience voted Sam Nolen’s story “The Black Attic” as the winner. “Hidden Books” by Lydia Kennedy and “Ghost” by Alora Hickman were runners-up. Nolen took home a $50 store gift card and will receive professionally bound copies of her story. Kennedy and Hickman each won a $25 store gift card. Everyone who submitted a story to the contest will receive 10% off their next purchase.

“We want to thank everyone who submitted a story to the contest and those that came out to participate in our grand opening,” said Kelley. “We had a great day.”
